If you are familiar with the Bible, then a lot of the references in this book will be even funnier because he often references bibilical stories in unique ways. (I loved the ongoing gag about Jesus always enjoying Chinese food on his birthday as a nod to the Jewish tradition for the day Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus.) The birth of Jesus has been well chronicled, as have his glorious teachings, acts, and divine sacrifice after his thirtieth birthday. In fact, I found myself marking several passages that were just hilarious. In the early part, the jokes seemed contrived, but by 100 pages in, there were several laugh out loud moments for me. Also, I felt the jokes got better as the book went on. I think I had to get used to Moore's writing style. To be honest, I was afraid in the first 50 pages or so that I wasn't going to like this book, but once it got going, I really enjoyed it. Heaven assigns the task to raise Biff, a childhood friend of Jesus Christ, from the dead to an angel named Raziel. I had never read any of Moore's novels, but I had been wanting to do so, and I figured a humorous satire would be something different than our normal fare. I'd like to give this 3.75 stars, but since that's not an option, I'm giving it four because it's closer to a 4 for me than a 3.
